Some years ago, I tried to run my own Language Course. |
In a hot afternoon, a passerby dropped in for some water. The secretary told him to feel at home, and got back to work. I was listening everything from the classroom... |
When the young man got closer to the water fountain, he tried to get along by asking out loud: |
"Does this school belong to Walter?" |
That very common word – water – written in the gallon’s cover, was not so simple for him! |
The secretary answered him, laughing up her sleeves. As soon as he left, we all exploded in laughers! (OK, I shouldn’t... But who would resist?) |
Fortunately, on that same day I put myself in his shoes, trying to recall the first English book that I read on my own. By skimming the pages, I used to guess most sentences before getting any idea of what it was about. |
All of a sudden – 'in a beautiful sunny morning' – the words 'begin' and ‘again’ popped up in my eyes. For the first time I noticed that some words appeared more often than others... |

If you’re a beginning Portuguese learner trying to understand a new text, start by identifying those words you already know. In case you're a more advanced one, try exactly the opposite: look for new words and information. |
