In my first days as a teacher, for numberless times I left the classroom in order to check the pronunciation of new English words. No problem.

Such easiness to put on a brave face was my father’s heritage. As we used to sell barbecue on the open market, my brother and I we got trained in public speaking!

Mas antes de correr, você tem que andar. Antes de andar, você tem que engatinhar. E nesse intervalo, vá se acostumando com os tombos!

Durante meus primeiros dias como professor, inúmeras vezes tive que sair da sala de aula para consultar a pronúncia das palavras novas do texto. Sem problemas.

Essa cara-de-pau foi herança do meu pai. De tanto vender churrasco na feira, meu irmão e eu ficamos treinados em falar em público! :-)

All of a sudden, he lost his temper and said in Portuguese – leaving the room:

“ – Let me do it on my own!”

(As each of the classrooms had its own air conditioning system, I had not noticed the fans in the reception.)

While he turned the fans off, the students looked at me surprised, as if asking themselves:

“ – Where the hell did this guy learn English?”

De repente, ele perdeu a paciência e disse em português – saindo da sala:

“ – Deixa que eu mesmo desligo!”

(Como em cada sala de aula havia um ar condicionado independente, eu não havia notado os ventiladores da recepção.)

Enquanto ele desligava o ventiladores, os alunos ficaram me olhando com aquela expressão de...

“ – Onde será que esse cara aprendeu Inglês?”
