Loved the article. Wow! Must have been scary! by: Danielle
I have never had that language problem as almost everyone speaks fluent English in Scandinavia. In fact I have the opposite problem to you in that there is not much incentive and you will hear many English speaking foreigners say there is no need to learn Finnish.
I never had a problem communicating and making friends and women here are very much into their education, careers and such, like me, so there was so much common ground. Sometimes I almost wish that no one spoke English because then I would be forced to speak Finnish and my Finnish language skills would be so much better now.
So in a way you are fortunate that nobody speaks English there because now you have to learn Brazilian Portuguese, which I heard is beautiful, and it's allways useful to learn a new language (though I didn't think so when I was in convent).
I'm proud of you Stacy. Take care in Brazil and keep enjoying the experience!

Now that you have mastered Brazilian Portuguese the possibilities are endless. Next up Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian, Urdu, Hindi, etc. You can be multilingual, work for the UN and bring the world together :)
