But what are the 'Common Words'?	Mas o que são as 'Palavras Comuns'?
The 'Common Words' may be called so since you recognize them at first sight and understand their meaning in several contexts. But that’s not always the case, as a friend once showed us... Some years ago, I tried to run my own Language Course. On a hot afternoon, a passerby dropped in for some water. The secretary told him to feel at home, and got back to work. I was listening to everything from the classroom... When the young man got closer to the drinking fountain, he tried to get along by asking out loud: "Does this school belong to Walter?" That very common word – water – written on the gallon’s cover, was not so simple for him! The secretary answered him, laughing up her sleeves. As soon as he left, we all exploded in laughter! (OK, I shouldn’t... But who would resist?)	As assim chamadas 'Palavras Comuns' só passam a sê-lo quando você as reconhece numa primeira lida e compreende seu significado em diferentes contextos. Mas este não parece ser sempre o caso, como um amigo certa vez nos mostrou... Há alguns anos, eu tive um Curso de Idiomas. Numa daquelas tardes bem quentes, um rapaz que estava passando entrou e pediu um copo d'água. A secretária lhe disse que ficasse à vontade, e voltou ao trabalho. Eu estava escutando tudo da sala de aula... Quando o rapaz chegou perto do bebedouro, ele tentou puxar papo fazendo a seguinte pergunta: "Essa escola é do Walter?" Aquela palavra tão simples - water/água – escrita na capa do galão, não era assim tão simples pra ele! A secretária continuou a conversa, tentando se conter. Assim que ele saiu, caimos todos na risada! (Tudo bem, eu não deveria... Mas quem iria resistir?)

Há alguns anos, eu tive um Curso de Idiomas.

Numa daquelas tardes bem quentes, um rapaz que estava passando entrou e pediu um copo d'água. A secretária lhe disse que ficasse à vontade, e voltou ao trabalho. Eu estava escutando tudo da sala de aula...

Quando o rapaz chegou perto do bebedouro, ele tentou puxar papo fazendo a seguinte pergunta:

"Essa escola é do Walter?"

Aquela palavra tão simples - water/água – escrita na capa do galão, não era assim tão simples pra ele!

A secretária continuou a conversa, tentando se conter. Assim que ele saiu, caimos todos na risada! (Tudo bem, eu não deveria... Mas quem iria resistir?)

Fortunately, on that same day I put myself in his shoes, trying to recall the first English book that I read on my own. By skimming the pages, I used to guess most sentences before getting any idea of what it was about. All of a sudden, the words 'begin' and ‘again’ popped up in my eyes. For the first time I noticed that some words appeared more often than others... Some words appeared more often than others... (Some phrases too:) That was a great insight for me. At that very moment, my own 'language momentum' had just begun. If you’re a beginning Portuguese learner trying to understand a new text, start by identifying those words you already know. In case you're a more advanced one, try exactly the opposite: look for new words and information.	Felizmente, naquele mesmo dia me coloquei na situação dele, ao lembrar do primeiro livro que li sozinho em inglês. Passando os olhos pelas páginas, eu tentava decifrar as frases para ter alguma idéia do que estava escrito ali. De repente - 'numa bela manhã de sol' - as palavras 'begin' e 'again' saltaram aos meus olhos. Pela primeira vez, notei que algumas palavras apareciam mais do que outras... (Algumas frases também:) Foi um momento e tanto pra mim. Desde então, minha compreensão da língua inglesa não parou de aumentar. Se você for um iniciante tentendo decifrar um novo texto, comece identificando aquelas palavras que você já conhece. Se já tiver alguma experiência, experimente o contrário: procure as palavras novas e a informação em si.

If you’re a beginning Portuguese learner trying to understand a new text, start by identifying those words you already know. In case you're a more advanced one, try exactly the opposite: look for new words and information.

Foi um momento e tanto pra mim. Desde então, minha compreensão da língua inglesa não parou de aumentar.

Se você for um iniciante tentendo decifrar um novo texto, comece identificando aquelas palavras que você já conhece. Se já tiver alguma experiência, experimente o contrário: procure as palavras novas e a informação em si.
