Loving the Opportunity to Learn Portuguese

I first visited Rio de Janeiro in July 2003. the purpose of my visit to help out with a church in Botafogo. We came with about twelve people from Corpus Christi, Texas.

After ten days, in which, I met some really good friends, the time came to leave unfortunately. As we were leaving to return home that first year, one of the interpreters personally thanked me for coming to her country.

That expression of gratitude and the love of all Brazilians I met there, has drawn me back to Brazil four times. Not only I, but my wife and daughter have gone back for visits.

On my second visit, one of the interpreters asked me if I would like to buy a Bible in Portuguese and English. I told her I would.

We went to a book store in the Rio Sul Mall and she told the saleslady what we wanted. The sales lady looked puzzled and asked who the author of the book was. My friend said “God”. The sales lady said, "No, really who is the author?" and my friend said staunchly, “God”.

I use that Bible to help me learn Portuguese. When I am in Brazil we not only help out at the church, but we also work with the children at Rocinha and Xerem.

The true friends I have met and corresponded with has given me a real desire to learn Portuguese better.

Visitei o Rio de Janeiro pela primeira vez em julho de 2003.

Éramos um grupo de doze pessoas da Corpus Christi, no Texas. O propósito de nossa visita era ajudar uma igreja em Botafogo.

Após dez dias, durante os quais fiz alguns amigos de verdade, chegou a hora de partir, infelizmente.

Quando estávamos nos preparando para a partida, uma das intérpretes veio me agradecer pessoalmente por ter vindo ao seu país.

Aquela expressão de gratidão e o amor de todos os brasileiros que encontrei me trouxeram de volta ao Brasil por mais quatro vezes. Não retornei sozinho, mas minha esposa e filha também me acompanharam.

Em minha segunda visita, uma das intérpretes me perguntou se eu gostaria de comprar uma Bíblia em português e inglês. Eu disse que sim.

Fomos à livraria no Shopping Rio Sul e ela disse à atendente o que queríamos. A senhora pareceu intrigada e perguntou quem era o autor do livro. Minha amiga disse “Deus”. A vendedora disse “Não, quem é o verdadeiro autor?” Minha amiga disse com firmeza: “Deus.”

Eu utilizo aquela Bíblia para aprender Português. Quando estou no Brasil nós não apenas ajudamos na igreja, mas também trabalhamos com as crianças da Rocinha e Xerem.

Os amigos verdadeiros que encontrei e com os quais me correspond me despertaram o interesse em aprender melhor o Português.
