Meus planos estavam funcionando muito bem, at� que minha m�e descobriu tudo! Ao inv�s de me passar um belo serm�o, me entregou um artigo intitulado �Liberdade Pessoal � Eleve Seu Olhar�. Eu peguei, desconfiado. Ela me olhou com uma vis�o de raio X � t�pica das M�es. Bem no meio da p�gina havia duas m�os algemadas � sobre o teclado de um piano. O artigo enfatizava � com uma hist�ria muito convincente � que se algu�m n�o sabe tocar um instrumento musical, tamb�m n�o tem a liberdade de faz�-lo. Por outro lado, um m�sico ter� sempre duas op��es � tocar ou n�o � e nisto se resume a ess�ncia da liberdade: a habilidade de escolher. Pra encurtar a hist�ria, mantive a poupan�a na cadeira. Foi assim que descobri que eu estava buscando a liberdade seguindo um caminho contr�rio � ela! Ao dedicar seu tempo e esfor�o para aprender Portugu�s, sabe o que voc� vai conseguir de tabela? Isso mesmo: muito mais liberdade. Embora minha m�e tenha falecido em 2000, seu modo de viver mostrou-me que o conhecimento verdadeiro gera liberdade. Ela viveu de acordo com suas cren�as. Por um bom tempo eu acreditava nela... Mas agora eu sei.
Searching for freedom has always been part of my life. After graduating from Junior High School, I secretly planned to drop out of school, supposing it would be the easiest way to be free.

My plans were working perfectly but all of a sudden my mom heard about it! Instead of giving me a long, long sermon, she handed me an article entitled 'Personal Freedom � Lift up Your Eyes'. I took it, intrigued. She looked at me with her X-ray vision � as only Moms can do. Right in the middle of the page there were two handcuffed hands over a piano keyboard. The article emphasized � through a compelling story � that if someone can't play a musical instrument, he/she is not free to do it.
That�s how I found my search for freedom was a complete misunderstanding: I was going to the opposite way! As you dedicate your time and efforts to learn Portuguese, do you know what you�re going to acquire likewise? That�s it: much more freedom. Though my mom passed away in 2000, her way of living clearly showed me that only true knowledge brings freedom. She lived up to her own beliefs. For a while I just believed her...
